We are dedicated to a greener township for a healthier world.
Hatfield Township is a member of the Northern Montgomery County Recycling Commission along
with ten other municipalities in the area. Each municipality works
together to improve recycling in the area. To assist residents in their
recycling efforts Hatfield Township offers several recycling programs. A
list of local businesses that collect certain items for recycling is
available here. Recycling information for township businesses can be found here.
Residents in Hatfield Township are required to recycle the following items as part of single stream recycling in the township.
Aluminum, Steel, and Bimetal cans
This includes all metal food, beverage, and aerosol cans.
Glass-Clear, Amber, and Green Glass
All glass food, beverage bottles, and jars are recyclable.
Plastics Number 1 through 7
Look on the bottom of the plastic bottle for the triangle with the number in it.
Newspapers, Magazines, and Junk Mail
Tie in a bundle or place in a paper bag.
Pick up and Drop-off Programs
Recycling and Trash haulers that service Hatfield Township can be found here.
Cardboard and Yard Waste Drop-Off
Third Saturday of every month from 8 a.m. to noon
Because
most trash haulers will not collect corrugated cardboard with regular
recycling, Hatfield Township offers a monthly drop-off at the Hatfield
Township Public Works Building, located on the corner of Unionville Pike
and Richmond Road.
Residents may also drop off moderate portions
of yard waste, such as leaves, garden residue, and tree branches (small
twigs) monthly as well. Biodegradable brown paper bags are available at
home improvement or grocery stores. Hatfield Township cannot accept
grass clippings at this time. Residents are limited to two trips of branches per Saturday.
Leaf, Branch and Grass Drop-Off
May
14, 2012 - The Lenhart Road Recycling Drop-Off Center is closed until
further notice. This regretful action is due to the continual excessive
use of individuals as well as illegal dumping by commercial entities.
The extensive costs related to address the volume of material
necessitated the closure while Hatfield Township considers appropriate
mechanisms to reopen the center. Providing a location for township
residents to place leaves from their yard and small branches is and will
be the goal of the Commissioners and staff, however the use by
non-residents and commercial companies have created operational
challenges. State recycling grant funds have covered the expenses to
date, however extensive staff time averaging over 35 man hours per week
and increased depreciation of equipment cannot be sustained.
Christmas Tree Drop-Off
After
the holiday season is over, bring your Christmas trees to the Hatfield
Community Park and Pool. You can leave the trees in a designated area
and they will get recycled. You can bring your trees as soon as December
26 until the end of January.
Bags to Benches
DROP OFF LOCATIONS:
Hatfield Township Adminstration Building ~Drop off located in lobby and open during normal building hours
Public Works Building ~Drop off the 3rd Saturday each month from 8:00 am to 12:00 pm
Giant Food Stores ~Located in lobbies and open during normal business hours
What is Bags to Benches?
A
program that converts plastic bags into park benches has become an
initiative of Hatfield Township, which will begin accepting clean,
pliable, plastic bags from Township residents during its third Saturday
monthly recycle program. By adding plastic bags to its collection
enterprise, the township becomes a partner to Giant Food Store, in a
program called “Bags to Benches.” Giant, in turn, works with Trex
Company, manufacturer of recycle plastic lumber. Since 1997, at its
stores throughout the Mid-Atlantic region, Giant has collected enough
plastic bags to make 1,500 benches, which have been placed into service
at parks, schools, fire stations, libraries and churches. More than 3
million pounds of bags were collected and baled by Giant in 2011 for the
program. It takes 10,000 bags to make one park bench.
Bags may
be from other businesses besides Giant, and can be tinted or have color
text. Dry cleaner bags, clear film and shrink wrap are acceptable, as
are bags used to contain home-delivery newspapers. The program will not
accept dirty bags nor hard plastic. The bags Hatfield Township staff
collect will be added to those collected at Giant Food Store, Hatfield,
destined for the Trex Company facility in Winchester, VA.

businesses must recycle electronics suchs as computeres, computer
monitors, laptops, television, tablets, and computer peripherals
(printers, keyboards, mouse devices, etc.) as of January 23, 2013.
Consumers and businesses will no longer be able to throw away their
covered electronic devices with their curbside trash.

Free Recycling Bins
Hatfield
Township offers free recycling bins to all residents. You may pick up
your free bin at the Hatfield Township Municipal Building during business hours
The
costs of the bins are covered by the Department of Environmental
Protection Act 904 Funds. Hatfield Township receives annual 904 funds
each year based on the amount of recyclables collected in the township.
Apartment Recycling Assistance
Hatfield
Township offers a multi-family dwelling recycling program for those
residents living in the over 2,000 apartments in the township. Most
residents living in apartments do not have space for the large recycling
bins used by homeowners. Through a Section 902 grant from the
Department of Environmental Protection, the township was able to
purchase smaller recycling bins that come with a handle. These bins are
available at the Hatfield Township Municipal Building, along with an
educational recycling handout.
Everyday Recycling Classroom Program
If
your family were graded on its recycling efforts, would you get an “A”
or an “F”? That’s what Pennfield Middle School students are asking
their elementary school peers in 2008, as part of a joint effort with
Hatfield and Towamencin townships to improve the overall municipal
recycling rate. Find out more about the Everyday Recycling Program, and download the brochure and report card.
